Volunteers in the News

5/16/2017 The Kensington Celebrates Volunteers!
We whole-heartedly say thank you...

If you, your family or organization are looking for volunteer opportunities, we encourage you to consider The Kensington.
You could enrich lives by helping with any of the following: Reading, Music, Arts & Crafts, Fun With Food, Spiritual Programs, Table Games (Bingo, Cards, etc)

Student Volunteers Welcome

Every year, a growing number of student volunteers from various schools, colleges, churches and synagogues volunteer at The Kensington. There are many opportunities to fit each student's gifts and goals, such as reading to a resident, singing and entertaining, or assisting with special activities or projects and more

We want volunteers to enjoy their experiences here as much as our residents do!

A Big Shout Out to the following organizations whose members volunteer on a regular basis at The Kensington:

Ann & Andy Child Care
Children ages four, five, and six from this daycare program make weekly visits to The Kensington. The preschoolers sing with our residents, perform plays or play a game or two of balloon volleyball. This intergenerational program truly benefits both the “grandparents” and “grandchildren”, as evidenced from the smiles and giggles from both populations when these children visit our community.

St Bernard’s Church
The Eucharistic Minister comes to The Kensington on a weekly basis providing ecclesiastic assistance for our residents.

Boy Scouts & Girl Scouts
Boys and girls connect with our seniors on many different levels, thus fulfilling their organizations’ goals of making the world a better place through activities such as baking, arts & crafts programs, board games, and one-on-one visits.

Congregation Kol Ami Synagogue
Singers visit twice a year to sing and entertain Kensington residents, families, and friends.

Mercy College
Graduate students from the Communication Disorders Department at Mercy College engage Kensington residents in one-hour, weekly communication groups. The students - who are supervised by a certified, licensed speech-language pathologist - use reminiscence therapy, topical discussions, and cognitive stimulation to promote social communication among our cognitively impaired residents.

The Soundettes
A local singing troupe comprised of members of the Junior League of Westchester on the Sound. They are committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. As part of their outreach, they visit once a year to sing and entertain our residents.

White Plains Youth Bureau
Students from the Bureau meet one-on-one with Kensington residents and work on intergenerational programs related to spirit, mind and body including, word games, Scrabble, Wheel of Fortune, Wii bowling, health trivia, and art projects.

Additional Organizations including White Plains Hospital’s Pastoral Department, St. Pius Church, Our Lady of Sorrows Youth Group, Scarsdale High School students, and families and friends of residents also volunteer and spend time with our residents, helping to enrich their lives.
